For treatment of High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) only. Patient breathes normal air through one-way inlet valve, while expired air is forced out through a resistance valve. The slight pressure upon exhalation results in increased air volume in lungs during breathing resting stage. The EPAP mask & PEEP valve may be beneficial as a temporizing measure until descent is accomplished or a hyperbaric chamber can be used. Studies on Denali indicated improved oxygen saturation using this system. Very compact and lightweight, this system is a must for every high-altitude medical kit.
